How did I get here?
When leaving school, I followed onto do my A levels in English, Law & Psychology; I completed my first year and it wasn’t what I thought it would be (which was fine!) I started looking around and found an administration apprenticeship within a local solicitor’s, I completed this but still wanted more! I dealt with a lot of conveyancing within that sector and fell in love with the construction aspect of the job which at 18 then led me on to a construction firm. I started as a receptionist, building my way up to an administrator and senior team member running a maintenance department for Hull University. But I still wanted more! So, 2.5 years ago local firm reached out to me offering me a degree apprenticeship to become a Quantity Surveyor, I took this opportunity with open arms and now we are here, and I couldn’t be happier!
I choose an apprenticeship route as I believe it was the most practical way to allow me to gain experience and training, while applying theoretical knowledge to real world projects, giving me the best possible chance in getting my dream job in the end while providing some financial stability along the way.
What does a day in my life look like?
Every day is different! 3 Days a week I will be up and down the UK visiting sites, looking at elevations, reviewing new contracts, having meetings with site managers, providing costings based on the progress of each individual site and forecasts for the following months. One day a week is my study day, this allows me to attend any lectures I may have, take any exams, complete assignments and overall allows me to not be overwhelmed with working full time and not having to use a lot of my own personal time to complete the degree. And my final day of the week is completing any financial tasks, and admin work which my be required.
